1) Start your R and let it run for 3-5 minutes.

2) Place drain bucket under your R.

3) Locate the motor oil drain bolt under the motor in the center of the factory plastic skid plate and remove it (12mm). ***NOTE: Oil is HOT***

4) Remove the Oil Fill Plug.

***Oil Fill Plug***

5) The area under the fill plug is usually dirty. Take a clean paper towel and dip it in the old oil and wipe this area clean. The oil on the towel helps the particles around the opening to stick to the towel and not drop into the motor. You may also stick a paper towel down into the opening to prevent dirt from entering while cleaning. I also wash the fill plug and drain bolt thoroughly to remove any dirt.

***Note the sand from under the fill plug***

6) I personally use a piece of tubing to blow into the motor to remove the last bit of oil after draining. This is optional but you would be surprised at the amount of oil remaining.

***Tubing…blow into the end my hand is on***

7) Remove the two bolts holding the oil filter cover on (8mm). ***NOTE: break one of the bolts loose then the other…do not completely remove one bolt before breaking the other loose. Doing so increases the amount of tension on the remaining bolt aiding with stripping or breaking of these bolts.

***Remove these two bolts to access filter***

8) After removing the cover note the rubber O-ring is to the outside of the cover and the spring is on the inside.

***Oil filter cover being removed NOTE: the bolt on the left is longer***

9) Clean up area and install new oil filter by placing the spring in the opposite end of the rubber O-ring. When you slide the filter in you will fill the spring slide up on the dowel. You may have to wiggle it up and down a bit…push the filter in by hand to verify tension against the spring and reinstall filter cover. The factory service manual says to snug the bolts. Remember to tighten one bolt a few turns then the other for a few turns then back to the first until both are snug. Do not completely tighten one bolt before the other. The motor is aluminum and the bolts are of the lightest (cheapest) material I have seen and break and strip very easily. This process of alternating will mitigate the risk.

10) Reinstall the oil drain bolt and torque to 16 ft lbs.

***Torque oil drain bolt to 16 ft lbs***

11) Fill engine with your oil of choice. I just began using Dumonde products and they have been recommended by many trusted sources. If you would like to purchase Dumonde products give Tyler from MSI Racing a call! Here is a link to his sponsor section on trx450r.org…drop him a post! http://www.trx450r.org/forum/index.php?showforum=58

***Adding oil***

12) Continue adding oil until the H mark on the sight glass is reached.

***Fill to H mark***

Congratulations!!! You have now changed your oil…please remember anytime you work on your R you run the risk of destroying it. Pay attention to what you are doing and try to avoid distractions. The most common problem is forgetting to fill with oil.
